Shehan Semasinghe, Minister of State for Samurdhi, Home Economics, Micro Finance, Self Employment, Business Development and Underutilized Resource Development stated in Parliament today (05) that the previous government had used the Samurdhi Fund for the welfare of the poor to achieve various political objectives.
The Minister of State said that an investigation is being carried out into the misappropriation of funds from the Samurdhi Social Security Fund and that the report of the special committee appointed to look into the matter could be submitted to Parliament within another month.
The Minister of State made this statement in response to a question raised by MP Jagath Kumara seeking an oral answer.
The Minister of State pointed out that the previous government had conducted a number of interviews at the Samurdhi Department with a view to the Presidential Election and had not even obtained proper approval for it.
