BY Dinitha Rathnayake Primary Healthcare, Epidemics, and Covid-19 Disease Control State Minister Dr. Sudarshini Fernandopulle held a preliminary discussion at the Health Ministry to formulate a unique programme for the effective development of the primary healthcare system in Sri Lanka. The initial discussions were held with officials of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) and the Health Ministry officials. She further said that the Primary Healthcare Project in Sri Lanka, which is currently being implemented with the assistance of the World Bank, should be further developed and move towards a sustainable health model. Discussions were held on the need to plan for a programme that addresses not only non-communicable diseases (NCDs) but also the overall health so as to identify diseases and for doctors to go to the village instead of the patient going to the hospital for patient care. It was emphasised that the service currently targeted at the health of the child and the mother of an active family should move towards a programme that focuses on the whole family, as well as long-term monitoring in collaboration with the research and development units. In preparing the plan, a school, as well as a village-based programme, should be approached to address specific areas and the focus should be on integrating restaurants, schools, home gardening, and rural gardening in schools. The project is planned to cover every village and it was proposed to set up 100 model villages in the initial phase. It was decided to organise a workshop to focus on a technical approach to the issues that need to be identified in the plan.
