Prioritising innovation in SL’s economic recovery

09 Oct 2022

  • Global Innovation Index Sri Lanka launched
The Global Innovation Index (GII) tracks the most recent global innovation trends and reveals the most innovative economies in the world, ranking the innovation performance of around 132 economies while highlighting innovation strengths and weaknesses. Envisioned to capture as complete a picture of innovation as possible, the index comprises around 80 indicators, including measures on the political environment, education, infrastructure, and knowledge creation of each economy. The different metrics that the GII offers help to monitor performance and benchmark developments against economies within the same region or income group. On 29 September, the 15th Global Innovation Index was launched by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). According to that, Sri Lanka has been ranked at 85th position in the GII 2022 among 132 world economies.  As this is a leap of 10 positions from where it was the previous year, i.e., at the 95th in GII 2021, the National Innovation Agency (NIA), the mandated Government institute of the country to bring forward Sri Lanka in global indices, organised a country launch at national level, along with the Centre for a Smart Future and the WIPO.  This took place on 7 October at TRACE Expert City, Colombo 10 and was made available for the interested parties to join virtually.  Minister of Education Dr. Susil Premajayantha was the Chief Guest, while Economics and Statistics Division Head of Section and WIPO Global Innovation Index Co-Editor Dr. Sacha Wunsch-Vincent and Oxford Said Business School Dean and GII Founder/Author Prof. Soumitra Dutta delivered the keynote address.  NIA Chief Innovation Officer Prof. Ajith de Alwis, NIA Innovation Officer Vindya Wijesinghe, Sri Lanka Technology Campus Director Planning and Operations and Trace City Board Member Heminda Jayaweera, MAS Holdings Chief Innovation Officer Ranil Vitharana, and Economist and Centre for a Smart Future Co-Founder Anushka Wijesinha also expressed their views.
