The Department of Prisons said that the continuous raids carried out by its special operations units had discovered 12 mobile phones in the Negombo Prison gully.
“12 mobile phones were retrieved from the sewage line located at the prison jailers’ quarters during a clean-up. It is possible that someone would have dumped these handsets into the gully as we are continuing the raids to confiscate any contraband items that are within the prison premises,” Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya told The Sunday Morning on Friday (10).
It is suspected that an officer of the prison had brought these mobile phones to give to the inmates. During the previous raids too, several contraband items were confiscated.
