The Department of Probation and Child Care Services and the Department of Prisons will soon launch a long-term programme to enhance the early childhood development of infants and children until the age of five who are imprisoned with their mothers for various offenses in prisons, stated Prison Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake yesterday.
Its main objectives are to create a child-friendly environment for infants imprisoned with their mothers, establish child care centers and to develop its facilities.
It is proposed to implement this project in 2021 in Welikada, Angunakolapelessa, Bogambara, Anuradhapura, Kuruwita and Kalutara prisons under the World Bank Early Childhood Development Project. Ekanayake said that the establishment of the prison premises and the modernization of the existing child care centers will be expedited.
