Private bus owners: Operations reduced by 50%

21 Jul 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara Private bus operators have reduced their operating numbers by half, The Morning reliably learnt.  Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association President Gemunu Wijeratne said that operators had been forced to suspend a host of buses from running. “There are no passengers due to the pandemic. We cannot run at full strength without incurring heavy losses,” Wijeratne said, noting that only around 50% of buses were currently in operation. He went on to say that private bus numbers may increase once schools reopen. “We can think of increasing our numbers once schools restart. Hopefully we will have more commuters then,” he said. He noted that the lack of social distancing within buses was a cause for commuters to further avoid using buses.
