Private pharmacies to help people locate meds

15 Jun 2022

BY Dinitha Rathnayake  The All-Island Private Pharmacy Owners’ Association will provide a complementary service to consumers with regard to locating medicines through its network of pharmacies. Speaking to The Morning, the Association’s President Chandika Gankanda said that the association is providing the service voluntarily, and that it receives more than 400 telephone calls per day. “It’s sad to hear what the public is going through, as some of them cannot afford to buy medicines due to the current price increase, but our association tries to find medicine with our current network,” he said. According to him, the people are facing difficulties buying medicines due to the prevailing price increase by 81%. “We are also facing losses due to price increases, since people cannot afford to buy medicine, and mainline medicine manufacturing companies and importers have stopped supplying medicine to pharmacies. And since the local supply is not enough to meet the demand, the shortage of drugs increases day by day alongside the price.” Drug importers are unable to import drugs as they cannot open letters of credit (LC) due to the US dollar crisis. Sri Lanka has been facing a drug shortage for a few months now.
