13 Jun 2022

By Buddhika Samaraweera The Sri Lanka Police is investigating the incident of an Officer-in-Charge (OIC) of the Weeraketiya Police Station having received death threats via text message, based on telephone analysis reports.  When contacted by The Morning yesterday (12), Police Media Spokesman, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and Attorney-at-Law (AAL) Nihal Thalduwa stated that the Weeraketiya Police has reported the incident to the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court. Following the submissions, he said that further investigations are being carried out based on the telephone analysis reports.  When queried as to whether the use of the telephone number from which the said text message has been received, he said that information regarding it could not be revealed at this point.  The Weeraketiya Police on 9 June reported to the Walasmulla Magistrate’s Court that Weeraketiya OIC Kelum Sangeethge had received death threats warning him not to investigate the obstruction of duties charges filed against Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition MP Dilip Wedaarachchi’s son and former Tangalle UC Chairman Ravindu Wedaarachchi, and the latter’s wife Nethmi Silva.  The Weeraketiya Police informed the court that OIC Sangeethge had been warned via text message that his house would be torched if he continued to investigate the charges against the politically linked couple. Ravindu Wedaarachchi and his wife Silva were arrested on 6 June in connection with obstructing duties of two police officers and an alleged attempt of assault regarding an incident near the Bedigama exit of the Southern Expressway on 1 June. They were charged with obstructing the duties of police officers and committing criminal violence. After being produced before the Walasmulla Magistrate on 8 June, they were released on bail.
