Probe on Covid-19 spread at Thulhiriya MAS Factory

21 May 2021

The Minister of Labor Nimal Siripala de Silva yesterday (20) directed the Commissioner General of Labour Attorney-at-Law Prabhath Chandrakeerthi Silva to immediately conduct an inquiry into the Covid-19 infection of 400 workers at the Thulhiriya MAS Factory.  Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva says it is unfortunate that such a large number of workers fell victim to the Covid-19 virus at a single factory, despite repeated instructions from employers and trade union leaders to set up health protection committees in factories to control the spread.  Accordingly, the Minister instructed the Commissioner General of Labour to immediately set up a health committee in the factory and initiate an investigation into whether the health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health were followed.  The Minister also requested the heads of institutions and trade union leaders to take necessary steps to activate these health committees in private sector factories and workplaces which are currently in operation.  The Minister also instructed the Commissioner General of Labour to take necessary steps in consultation with the private sector to provide relief and leave benefits to pregnant women working in private sector factories and workplaces.
