23 Aug 2021

BY Pamodi Waravita The Prisons Department yesterday (23) stated that two investigations are being conducted by the Prisons Department and the Police into the incident where All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen had allegedly threatened a doctor at the Welikada Magazine Prison Complex on 15 August. “When the doctor in question had been treating another patient, Bathiudeen had allegedly scolded and threatened him. An investigation is being conducted into it by an Assistant Superintendent of the Prisons Department and by the Police,” Prisons Department Media Spokesman and Prisons Commissioner Chandana Ekanayaka told the media yesterday. According to Ekanayaka, regarding the matter, the said doctor had submitted a complaint in writing to Prisons Commissioner General (CG) Thushara Upuldeniya, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chandana D. Wickramaratne, and Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Asela Gunawardena, claiming obstruction of duty, the use of insulting language, and the levelling of death threats. Bathiudeen, who was previously briefly hospitalised at the Colombo National Hospital whilst incarcerated, is in the custody of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after being arrested on 24 April 2021 and detained by the CID under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979 as amended, in connection with his alleged involvement in the Easter Sunday terror attacks. Last week, he was ordered to be remanded till 1 September by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.
