Process of action against those who employ children is slow: NCPA

09 Apr 2021

Chairman of the National Child Protection Authority Prof. Muditha Vidanapathirana says that the enforcement of the law by the police for those who engage in employing children is slow. The Chairman says that the process of arresting child beggars for the year 2019 is not significant. He further stated that although there were 298 reported cases of child begging in 2019, only 51 incidents have been reported after being referred to the relevant police. Of these, the child and the adult have been found only on six occasions, he said, adding that the success rate is about 2 percent. He added that due to the Covid epidemic in 2020, only 200 cases of child begging were reported.
