Proposal to appoint Parliamentary Select Committee to be tabled today

The Secretary General of the Parliament Dhammika Dasanayake today stated that the proposal to appoint a Parliamentary Select Committee to look into the shortcomings in the electoral structure and make recommendations to amend them would be tabled today. Following the commencement of sittings of Parliament today (05) at 10.00 am, the entire day will be reserved for oral questions of Members of Parliament until 4.00 pm. The Secretary General of Parliament stated that the Committee on Parliamentary Affairs agreed to a motion moved by the Leader of the House and Minister of External Affairs Dinesh Gunawardena today (05) to give the Members of Parliament the opportunity to ask 50 oral questions. He also said that the Parliamentary Committee on Parliamentary Affairs had decided to hold the adjournment debate on the final report of the Presidential Commission of Inquiry into the Easter attack on April 21, 2019, on April 04. In addition, the final report of the Presidential Commission to Investigate and Receive Information on Political Retaliation will be tabled in Parliament on April 08 and 09. The Committee on Parliamentary Business has also decided to hold a debate. On April 6, 08 issues will be taken up for debate, including the regulations under the Imports and Exports Act, the provisions under the Strategic Development Projects Act and the proposal to revise the salary and allowances of the Director General of the Commission to Investigate Bribery or Corruption. Meanwhile, on a motion moved by the Chief Opposition Whip Lakshman Kiriella, the Committee on Parliamentary Business agreed to adjourn the House for 20 minutes from the adjournment motion to hear two questions from Government and Opposition Parliamentarians, the Secretary General of Parliament stated.
