Proposed new Constitution: Siva Senai asks for equal status for Hinduism as Buddhism

09 Apr 2021

Siva Senai, a Hindu rights organisation, has made three key proposals to be included in the new Constitution, including making Hinduism equal to Buddhism, by giving it the priority status currently afforded to Buddhism in the existing Constitution. In a statement to the press, Siva Senai Leader Maravanpulavu K. Sachithananthan had said that since there is an uninterrupted historical thread of the Hindu faith in Sri Lanka, the new Constitution must give priority status to Hinduism.  Siva Senai is also proposing that Hinduism and Buddhism be given protection in the form of an anti-conversion clause to be introduced in the new Constitution, and also that a bovine protection clause be included to prevent the slaughter of cows, bulls, and calves. The statement has further said that this recognition in the Constitution will “formalise the inclusive social and cultural traditions of Buddhists, in continuing to follow and practice the intrinsically inbuilt Sri Lankan Hindu way of life”.
