Proposed state sector salary cut: Complaint lodged with HRCSL

19 May 2020

The National Trade Union Centre (NTUC) has lodged a complaint with the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) against the pay cut from salaries of public sector servants. NTUC General Secretary Mahinda Jayasinghe charged that the Government had reduced a day’s pay of government sector employees’ salaries without their consent. “A day’s salary has been cut from the wages of postal workers for the month of April without any discussion with or approval from the postal workers,” he said, noting that this was against regulations. He said that the deduction was made upon the request made by President’s Secretary Dr. P.B. Jayasundera. “They are using Dr. Jayasundera’s letter to make these deductions, but the Government cannot make such salary changes without consulting with the employees,” he said. He charged that they expect there to be more deductions in May as well, and that if it isn’t stopped, they would resort to trade union action. “The Chief Accountant of the Samurdhi Department has written a letter regarding the deduction of a day’s pay for the month of May of Samurdhi officials. If the Government doesn’t stop this, we will take trade union action as well as resort to legal remedies,” Jayasinghe said. Several attempts by The Morning to obtain the views of the HRCSL failed.
