President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday (22) said the people, especially the critics on social media, should fulfil their responsibility to protect the environment instead of merely talking about it as a trend.
President Rajapaksa added that it is easier to protect the environment if everyone fulfills their responsibility without only commenting on the environmental destruction.
The President made this observation while participating in the “Surakimu Ganga” national programme where he unveiled the “Surakimu Ganga” monument near the Menik River in Kataragama.
Speaking further, the President said that he is being villainised when it comes to issues relating to the environment.
“When I look at social media, I feel like I am the sole enemy of the environment. They say that I am the one who cut down the trees and my industries are the ones that add all the waste to the rivers,” he said.
The Ministry of Environment and the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) launched the “Surakimu Ganga” national programme for the protection of rivers in Sri Lanka.
