Environmentalists staged a protest at the Ministry of Environment on 02 December, demanding that the forests and sensitive environment areas and reserves be protected by the reckless decisions taken by State Minister of Wildlife Protection, Adoption of Safety Measures including the Construction of Electrical Fences and Trenches and Reforestation and Forest Resource Development Wimalaweera Dissanayaka and State Minister of Land Management, State Enterprises Land and Property Development Roshan Ranasinghe.
Ananda Sagara Thero delivered a speech demanding that the ministers put an end to the natural resource destruction and robbery that is taking place in the North Central and Eastern Provinces as well as in the Flood Plains National Park.
Several incidents were reported where Dissanayaka and Ranasinghe had flexed their political powers to reprimand officials that have been serving the Department of Forest for decades, and obstructing the forest range officers from doing their duties.
