Public institutions to cut down on fuel, electricity use

10 Mar 2022

  • Circular issued urging reduced A/C, elevator, and vehicle utilisation
Taking into account the ongoing crises in the country, the Ministry of Public Services, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has issued a series of guidelines on conserving fuel and electricity at public institutions. Dated 8 March (Tuesday), the relevant circular was issued by Ministry Secretary J.J. Ratnasiri. Accordingly, public institutions are urged to keep air conditioners (A/Cs) switched off between 2.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. In addition, officials are encouraged to use the staircase as much as possible and reduce use of the elevator by a single person. The circular also noted that nearly 75,000 vehicles are owned by public institutions at the moment.  “If one vehicle manages to save one litre of fuel a day, a total of 75,000 litres of fuel can be saved just within a day,” it read further. Thereby, payments made for extra fuel for ministers and public sector officials have also been halted. Further, calling outstation officials to head offices in Colombo for meetings and other purposes has also been limited. Instead, they are encouraged to conduct meetings virtually.
