Pulmoddai Mineral Sand Depository: Value-adding process commences

29 Dec 2020

Plans are afoot to stop the sorting and exporting of minerals extracted from the Pulmoddai Mineral Sand Depository to be sold as raw materials to foreign countries, and instead steps are to be taken to begin the value-adding process to increase revenue, stated Industries Minister Wimal Weerawansa. He said: “I have summoned the Chairman and General Manager of Lanka Mineral Sands to Colombo to discuss the process of stopping the export of this precious mineral as a raw material, and adding value to it in the future. “As it is difficult for us as a Government agency to do that work alone, we have now started working on a public-private partnership to obtain the necessary technology. We look forward to taking the necessary steps in the coming year.” This will enable Lanka Mineral Sands to earn several times more in the future than it currently earns, he added. “One of the significant priorities in the Gazette Notification issued by the President to the Minister of Industries is to ‘explore the existing underground and oceanic mineral resources using modern high technology and to utilise the existing mineral resources to strengthen the country's manufacturing process’. Accordingly, we swear before you at this juncture that we will work to elevate the role of the Lanka Mineral Sands company,” Weerawansa said.
