Pushpika evades police summons, requests alternate date for Chamuditha inquiry

By Ruwani Fonseka Former Mrs Sri Lanka beauty queen Pushpika De Silva, who was summoned to the Piliyandala police today in regards to the ongoing investigation on the attack on journalist Chamuditha Samarawickrama, has not turned up at the police station and has requested for an alternate date at the last minute, The Morning reliably learns. Speaking to The Morning today (23), the Piliyandala police Officer in Charge (OIC) confirmed that De Silva did not show up to produce her statement at the police station despite confirming attendance today. "Pushpika De Silva did not turn up at the stipulated time, which was 10am this morning. She instead, has sent a request for an alternate date citing no valid reason," the OIC confirmed. When inquired as to why De Silva was summoned, the OIC mentioned that upon detailed investigations into call records, it was important that De Silva be interviewed as there has been a series of phone calls that has raised suspicions. "Based on detailed investigations into Chamuditha's case, there has been phone calls exchanged between people of interest into this case. So, we had summoned Mrs De Silva to come and lodge her statement. We can now only wait until a date is set," he said. Journalist Chamuditha's house in Piliyandala was attacked on the 14th of February with stones and pots of excrement, and an investigation is currently underway as leading politicians, civil activist groups and media personnel have requested an comprehensive investigation be done into the matter, additionally requesting the freedom of media and speech.
