Put safety mechanism in place before reopening schools: TUs

22 Nov 2020

Several teachers’ trade unions urged the Education Ministry to put in place a proper safety mechanism at schools to prevent spread of COVID-19 prior to reopening of schools. The third term of government schools except those in the Western Province and isolated areas will commence tomorrow for students of Grade 6 to 13. Expressing concerns, Ceylon Teachers’ Union General Secretary Joseph Stalin said neither the teachers nor the principals were consulted before the decision on school reopening was taken. “The ministry should give an assurance to the parents that COVID-19 virus will not be spread through the schools,” he said, Meanwhile, the Ceylon Teachers Service Union said the schools should reopen but a proper mechanism should be put in place to ensure the safety of the students. “Postpone the reopening of schools for a while until arrangements have been made at schools to ensure the safety of the students,” it said.
