Rain to continue through the week

The prevailing showery conditions over the southwestern part of the island are likely to continue during the next few days, the Department of Meteorology said. Fairly heavy falls of about 50 mm are to be expected in the Western, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Central Provinces and in the Galle and Matara Districts within the day. Wind speed can increase up to 40-50 kmph at times over the island, particularly in the western slope of the Central Hills along with the Northern, North Central, and North Western Provinces and in the Hambantota District. Showers or thunderstorms are forecasted to occur at several places in the sea areas around the island and heavy showers are likely at some places in the deep-sea area to the Northeast of the island. Winds will be Southwesterly and the wind speed will be 35-45 kmph in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed can increase up to 50-60 kmph at times in the deep and shallow sea areas extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankesanturai and from Matara to Batticaloa via Hambantota and Pottuvil. The deep and shallow sea areas extending from Colombo to Trincomalee via Puttalam, Mannar, and Kankesanturai and from Matara to Batticaloa via Hambantota and Pottuvil can be rough at times. The other sea areas around the island can be fairly rough at times.
