Rajitha alleges paracetamol shortage in 44 hospitals

22 Feb 2022

  • Claims surgeries disrupted due to lack of equipment
  • Govt. denies shortage, maintains local production and distribution sufficient
BY Buddhika Samaraweera  Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Opposition Parliamentarian Dr. Rajitha Senaratne claimed that there is a shortage of paracetamol in 44 hospitals at present. Addressing a media briefing held yesterday (22), he also claimed that the performance of many surgeries has also been disrupted in hospitals due to the irresponsible acts of the Government.  “At present, many hospitals cannot perform surgeries. Hospitals do not have the necessary equipment and today there is a shortage of paracetamol in 44 hospitals.”  The former Health Minister also said that during his tenure as the Health Minister, hospitals were provided with all the necessary facilities to perform a number of surgeries, but that all of them have been halted at present as the Government has no interest in carrying out such.  “By the time I became the Health Minister, the health service was said to be free, but the people had to pay for everything like contact lenses and hearing aids. There were no facilities to perform surgeries such as bone marrow transplants. If there was anyone with cancer in the blood, they had nothing to do but to die if they had no money. However, we established all facilities to perform all such surgeries.”  Dr. Senaratne further queried: “Where is the Government Medical Officers’ Association now? At that time, they said that my citizenship should be abolished, but now there is no medicine in hospitals and there is no way to perform surgeries. Isn’t it those who are responsible for this situation who should be deprived of their citizenship?”  However, when inquired about the alleged shortage of paracetamol yesterday (22), Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Ministry Secretary Dr. S.K. Rathnayake said that there is no such shortage as the production of paracetamol required for hospitals is done locally. He added that locally produced paracetamol is being distributed to both Government and private hospitals. Meanwhile, State Pharmaceuticals Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) Chairman Dr. Uthpala Indrawansa told The Morning yesterday (22): “In the last 30 days, the SPMC has produced 62 million paracetamol tablets, of which more than 25 million has been distributed to Government hospitals and more than 35 million to the local market. There is no shortage of paracetamol.”
