The Government today claimed that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe is expected to lose his Party leadership.

Addressing a media briefing at the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna headquarters at Nelum Mawatha, Battaramulla, former UPFA Parliamentarian Lakshman Yapa Abeywardana said that UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe  had acknowledged the legitimacy of Parliamentary elections by announcing that they would be forming an alliance of parties.

“Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that UNP and several other parties would contest as a coalition. This clearly means that they have accepted the upcoming general elections. But their former coalition was what ruined this country in the last three years.”

He went on to say that Wickremesinghe would soon lose his Party leadership and that the UNP was weakened due to party infighting.

“The party has split into three. Ranil Wickremesinghe will soon lose his leadership position. There are three group within the party now, one with Champika Ranawaka and Rajitha Seneratne, another with Ravi Karunanayake as well as a third group. Sajith Premadasa too is day dreaming. There is no hope for the UNP,”

Former UPFA Parliamentarian, Piyal Nishantha De Silva, who also took part in the press conference, warned former UNP Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra not to criticize President Maithripala Sirisena.

“Hirunika better watch what she says about the President unless she wants all her dirt to be revealed to the masses. She better cease criticizing the President,” he said.
