Ranking the all-time greatest holiday hit songs

27 Dec 2020

By Patrick de Kretser Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I absolutely love randomly ranking things. After all, it is so much easier to list something out when I put in the disclaimer that it is simply a list built around my own preferences. Of course, the downside of putting out your own personal list of “best movies” or “best songs” is that you will probably receive a lot of judgement from people who find your taste in things to be quite bizarre. Well, that is usually the life I lead when I publish things like this, but I will live it anyway. With that being said, and to still stay in the holiday spirit, I thought it would be best to showcase how I rank the greatest holiday songs of all time. Perhaps you may find one to share with your family and friends during this season of giving. #5 Mariah Carey – All I Want for Christmas is You I mean, it really was inevitable that Mariah Carey was going to grace this list. This, by the way, might just be the most well-known holiday song on air right now, as Mariah Carey has made it a reoccurring trend to sing this song almost every year since 1994. The most recent release involved her reprising the song amongst others in the album alongside Ariana Grande and Jennifer Hudson. As far as Christmas is concerned, Mariah Carey certainly ranks amongst the gold standard of holiday musicians. This song in particular is certainly one of the best songs to crack out the dance moves and really get your body bursting with energy, so it is a great song to start off your festive celebrations this year. #4 Frank Sinatra – Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Frank Sinatra simply has one of those absolutely mesmerising voices, which adds so much more to the Christmas spirit. The song is iconic for its inclusion in many movies and shows, adding to an already existing nostalgic appeal to this gem. It is certainly the most ideal song to play while sitting in your living room during the height of the holiday season with your family. #3 Bing Crosby – White Christmas While we are still on the subject of mesmerising voices, how can you not include Bing Crosby? White Christmas has to be the song with the slowest pace to the lyrics and tempo. In many ways, it practically comes off as a sweet and silent hum which is enough to get you to that happy place for a while. As it is a song which has survived for decades and still ranks on top of most Christmas albums and probably will continue to do so for many years to come, White Christmas is certainly one you need to have on the playlist this year. #2 Ariana Grande – Santa Tell Me This one probably might come off as quite a shocker to a lot of people, but I actually quite like this holiday track from Ariana Grande. When it comes to Christmas songs, it usually would be the case to prefer classics from decades back rather than modern-day iterations, but I will make an exception for this one. Sometimes you just need something new in the playlist to really keep with the times. After all, the greatest playlists should always include the best of both worlds from the past and present. #1 Mariah Carey – O Holy Night It probably sounds a little tacky to include Mariah Carey twice on this list, but it really is with good reason. Few can match Mariah Carey when it comes to vocals, which would only give her a tremendous advantage with songs like O Holy Night, which I really rank as one of the greatest holiday songs regardless of who sings it. O Holy Night is certainly a song that has withstood the test of time, with numerous versions being released by various singers and bands over many years. If given the choice, I would say that a choir performance of O Holy Night would easily triumph any other version of the song, including Mariah Carey’s version. But since going to church is not an easy option due to quarantine, Mariah Carey and her music will certainly prove to be a suitable replacement for that role.
