Rapid increase in dengue cases

Epidemiology Unit Disease Surveillance reports reflect a total of 19,474 cases of dengue reported from 1 January to 21 May. At the end of the third week of May, the number of dengue cases reported islandwide stood at 485. In comparison to the number of cases recorded for the first week of May, which was 96, the number has increased five fold over the past two weeks. The highest numbers of dengue patients were recorded from Kandy (86), Ratnapura (84), Batticaloa (50), Jaffna (45), Colombo (40), and Kegalle (40) for the past three weeks. With the southwestern monsoon soon to begin, the National Dengue Control Unit predicts a spike in the number of dengue patients from June onwards, with the Regional Director Health Service areas of Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Galle, Kandy, Ratnapura, Kurunegala, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, and Kalmunai identified with the highest prevalence.
