14 Nov 2021

  • Tourism Minister says construction to be completed by first quarter of 2022
By Dinitha Rathnayake Development work on the Ratmalana International Airport, which is to be established as a regional airport, will be expedited, according to Minister of Tourism Prasanna Ranatunga. Noting that the work of widening the dock and runway at the Ratmalana International Airport commenced in May and is currently in progress, he stated that the total cost for this project is Rs. 220 million, and construction work is expected to be completed in the first quarter of next year. Upon completion of the project, the airport's dock capacity and runway efficiency are expected to increase by about 75%. It is also expected to construct a control centre with air navigation facilities and an air traffic control tower at the Ratmalana Airport. Minister Ranatunga points out that the Government is also focusing on improving commercial operations at the Ratmalana International Airport, with agreements already entered into with five domestic airlines to operate commercial services. Discussions are underway to set up an airport training school at the Ratmalana Airport, while work is also underway to launch International Scheduled Operations. The Ratmalana International Airport was established in 1938, but regional international flights have not been operational ever since the commencement of flights from Katunayake International Airport in 1968.  The Government also recently took steps to remove aircraft parking and parking charges for one year for the promotion of international flights at Ratmalana Airport and to suspend the airport service tax levied on passengers for one year. After the current Government came to power, it was planned to develop the Ratmalana International Airport in five main areas. It is to be developed as a local aviation hub, a recreational aviation centre, and an aviation training centre. In addition, measures will be taken to promote the importation of private jets to Sri Lanka, targeting high-income earners, and to meet the requirements of technical parking services for private jets such as jet refuelling.
