Ratmalana Airport to launch first int. flight in 50 years

06 Oct 2021

An international flight is scheduled to take off from Ratmalana Airport to the Maldives next month, according to the Tourism Ministry, marking the first transnational flight from the airport in fifty years.  The move reportedly came after extensive discussion with Maldives Airlines, which agreed to resume flights from the said airport.  Ratmalana International Airport was established in 1938, but regional international flights from the airport were suspended due to the commencement of flights from Katunayake International Airport in 1968.  It is planned to launch new regional international flights using the resources available at the Ratmalana Airport, the Ministry said. Accordingly, the Ratmalana Airport will be used as a regional international airport, focused on India and the Maldives.
