Raw Punk Visions: An eye-opening experience

12 Jan 2022

Two artists, Nuwan Shilpa Hennayake and Roashan Kamal, who share similar artistic expressions, recently came together in an exhibition titled “Raw Punk Visions”.  Brunch spoke to the two on how the collaboration came to be and what one can understand from the creatively curated pieces.  “We were just discussing that we’d like to collaborate on an art-related front and once we had decided on what exactly we wanted to exhibit, it was just a matter of following through and finding a location,” Nuwan told us, when talking about how the exhibition came to be, adding that once the location was secured, everything else flowed into place naturally.  Vikara Sanni  When speaking about his segment of the exhibition, Nuwan told us that Vikara Sanni is an artistic exploration in which he explores his contribution to collective psychosis.  “It’s my hand-drawn art project and it’s based on exploring the dichotomy of an idea of the sacred and the profane and how it is sort of reflected in my own temperament and how I experienced it,” he commented.  When talking about the sub-category – Subconscious Perturbations – he explained that it is to show that the sacred can be understood as the collective representations that transcend the humdrum of everyday life and the profane as everything else; all things mundane. He further added that while this dichotomy serves as a valuable tool for understanding and navigating the world, it creates a separation in the felt presence of direct experience and embeds a dimension of state of anxiety within it.  “Subconscious Perturbations is an exploration of how this dimension of anxiety is reflected in my temperament,” he added.  We asked him if these were pieces that he had previously worked on or if it was a concept he created for the exhibition. He informed us that at any given time, he’d have about 30-40 pieces on hand, and Vikara Sanni is a carefully selected curation of his existing work. “There are even some pieces that date back to 2015 and some more recent; they’re all what I worked on throughout the year,” he said.  Holomind  Roashan’s concept is a bit more intricate and requires one to have an open mind when viewing it to truly grasp its meanings. When speaking to us on his concept, he explained that Holomind is a projection of drawings based upon “cosmic symbolic architectonics”, “sacred geometrics”, and nature’s numbering systems that appear to be everywhere in nature striving for beauty and completeness.  For those of you who don't know, architect tectonics is the study of architecture and structures, which he brought to life with the use of freehand drawing and a compass. He also uses a lot of dots in his art, as it is a symbol he believes to be omnipresent in our day-to-day lives.  He told us that the art of holographic projection is the creation of light beams of information in free space, allowing travel through certain time vector possibilities, to have a better understanding of the synthesis of the mathematical functions of time, space, and harmonic order in symbolic structures, projection of holographic symbols, and architectonic higher dimensional realms of collective consciousness.  On the same topic, he affirmed: “I have come to a certainty that we live in a ‘fractal holographic universe’ made of light,” and explained that he believes Earth to be our mother; “she feels you and she knows your name”.   He vaguely explained that everything that is, is of everything else that is. “Nothing by itself is alone. The one force of the universe is the energy of the thinking mind,” he told us, and of course, to our naïve minds, may seem like high art jargon but to put it simply, he believes we should all cultivate our mind into the new ways of collective consciousness.  The exhibition strays from the usual format of an art gallery and once you enter, you’d see a collection of little trinkets and knick-knacks belonging to the two scattered purposefully around the hall. They want Raw Punk Visions to be as raw and open to interpretation as possible and compel their audience to view it as an experience rather than simply just another art exhibition.
