Re-emerging Covid-19 after quarantine period: Health authorities say minimal chances

16 Jul 2020

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa The chances of the Covid-19 virus being carried by a person who has completed a 14-day quarantine period are very minimal, Ministry of Health Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said yesterday (15). He told The Morning that the chances of this happening couldn’t be ruled out, but are very minimal. As explained by Dr. Samaraweera, an infected person could go into society even though the authorities are conducting PCR tests. “Tests are not always 100% accurate,” Dr. Samaraweera stressed. “At present, we are conducting PCR tests for all returnees and they are being sent on a 14-day quarantine period at quarantine centres and another 14-day period at their respective homes. After the end of each 14-day period, PCR tests are being conducted,” he explained, adding that the authorities are doing their maximum at present. Urging the public to follow the health guidelines issued by the authorities, Dr. Samaraweera said the authorities have issued such guidelines as they are important in preventing the spread of the disease.
