Ready to vaccinate kids if approved: Channa Jayasumana

By Buddhika Samaraweera The State Ministry of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals has stated that it is ready to commence the vaccination of schoolchildren above 12 years, as soon as a recommendation on the date for the commencement of vaccinations for schoolchildren is given by the Advisory Committee on Communicable Diseases (ACCD). Speaking to the media, the Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana said that arrangements were in place to begin vaccinating schoolchildren against the Covid-19 once the relevant recommendation is made by the ACCD. “There is the ACCD, which advises the Health Ministry in this regard. Accordingly, once a recommendation is made by it, we are ready to commence the vaccination of schoolchildren and the country is currently receiving enough stocks of vaccines for that purpose,” he said.  Accordingly, The Morning contacted the Health Ministry Communication Director, Public Health Services Deputy Director General (DDG), and the Disaster Preparedness and Response Division Head Dr. Hemantha Herath to inquire as to whether the ACCD would take a decision in the near future regarding the administration of Covid-19 vaccines to school children over 12 years of age. In response, he said the ACCD would, most probably, meet in the next two weeks to discuss the matter and reach a final decision. “It is not possible to make an immediate decision in this regard until proper data is available,” he said. Meanwhile, Prof. Jayasumana said that more stocks of Pfizer vaccines would arrive in the country in the coming weeks. “Nearly 800,000 US-German Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine doses have arrived in the country recently and more would be delivered in the coming weeks,” he stated.
