It is unlikely that President Gotabaya Rajapaksa would reconvene the dissolved Parliament, The Morning learnt.
Government Spokesperson and former State Minister of Investment Promotions Keheliya Rambukwella told The
Morning that it was doubtful the old Parliament would be reconvened.
“The President’s last remarks about the matter was to question what he could not do without the powers of the
Parliament. So far everything is going fine with regard to government finances and legislation. So I don’t think he
would opt to summon the former Parliament,” he said.
The Government Spokesperson noted that there were adequate existing laws to address the Covid-19 outbreak.
“There are several pieces of legislation that can be utilised to fight the coronavirus pandemic. Therefore, there is no
real need to pass any new laws,” he noted.
He went on to say that if needed, the President would consult the former Members of Parliament of the ruling Government, regarding a reconvening of the old Parliament.
