The Ministry of Health has issued a warning to the masses over the spread of rat fever with 6,096 cases being recorded this year, of which 70 were fatalities.
Ministry of Health Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that the risk was high due to it being spread through occupational exposure.
“The disease is common among the agricultural sector. It is spread through the urine of rats and other animals and gets into groundwater,” he explained.
He said that the Ratnapura District has the highest number of cases (1,341), while other districts experiencing high numbers of cases includes Kalutara, Galle, Hambantota, Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Kegalle, Colombo, and Gampaha.
He called on the citizens in high-risk occupations and regions to seek medical assistance as soon as they notice any symptoms of rat fever.
Rat fever, or leptospirosis, has symptoms of high fever and severe body pains.
“In addition, there can be other symptoms such as headaches and red eyes. Individuals should immediately seek medical attention if they experience such symptoms,” he added.Red alert on rat fever
