“Studies have revealed that disposable carbon pens and toothbrushes potentially cause significant environmental damage. For the first time in our country, a programme to recycle discarded carbon pens and toothbrushes will be launched in the coming weeks,” Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera told The Morning.
Two private companies, INSEE Cement and Atlas Sri Lanka, last week signed an agreement with the Ministry of Environment to support the recycling of discarded toothbrushes and empty carbon pens.
Each school and state institution is to be given a specially designed drop box that could hold 2,000 used pens and 500 used toothbrushes.
“We recently partnered with the Ministry of Environment to launch an islandwide recycling project to reduce the amount of plastic released into the environment. An MoU was signed between us, the Ministry and INSEE Cement, signifying our participation and support in reducing the damage single-use plastics cause to the environment,” Atlas Managing Director Asitha Samaraweera stated.
This programme is to be symbolically presented to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa at a future date and the initial launch of the programme is scheduled to take place at the Vijitha Central College, Dickwella.
