Registrar of Pesticides was removed from post for undermining state policy: Aluthgamage

23 Nov 2021

Minister of Agriculture Mahindananda Aluthgamage stated that the Registrar of Pesticides was removed from his position as he has acted in a manner which undermined state policy and has overruled the ban on Glyphosate along with several other chemicals. He made this statement while speaking in Parliament a short while ago today (23). Earlier today, the Ministry of Agriculture stated that the decision to remove the Registrar of Pesticides was made because he issued a gazette notification lifting the ban imposed on multiple chemical compounds including Glyphosate. An Extraordinary Gazette notification had been published yesterday (22) revoking the Gazette issued in 2014 prohibiting the use and sale of several pesticides including Glyphosate. Issued by the Registrar of Pesticides Dr. J. A. Sumith and dated November 01, it revokes the previous Gazette “in the interest of the public and on the advice of the Pesticide Technical and Advisory Committee.” Glyphosate weed killers have been banned in Sri Lanka for the past 7 years, and Aluthgamage confirmed that this decision would not change.
