Reinforcing critical capabilities of the digital world

In an increasingly digital age, where consumers are continuously seeking elevated digital experiences, the need for online interactions that are both inviting and secure is vital. WSO2 Vice President and Identity Access Management Head Geethika Cooray explains the introduction of its next generation identity as a service (IDaaS) solution – Asgardeo – to create frictionless user experiences in minutes.   What were the beginnings of the Asgardeo solution?   We understand the need to help users enjoy a simple, seamless, and secure experience when logging into a client’s app. Now there is an exact science to create and deliver these digital experiences in the form of Customer Identity and Access Management (CIAM), and we believe it is the cornerstone of delivering great digital experiences.              What role does CIAM have in delivering the experience?   Identity Access Management has been around for some time now and is already being used by most businesses to manage the details of their employees. It is something many organisations are familiar with. What has changed is that today, businesses have realised the potential to be gained by implementing a similar system for their customers.  To deliver seamless and personalised digital experiences, companies must not only securely organise customer data but also integrate customer relationship management (CRM), digital ads, and ecommerce into a single identity platform. However, we noted that developers often lack the expertise to incorporate CIAM into applications.   How does Asgardeo set a new industry standard?   Asgardeo is a next generation identity as a service (IDaaS) solution that makes it easy to integrate CIAM into any application. As a solution, Asgardeo combines traditional employee Identity Access Management (IAM) principles with consumer credential security to create a secure, personalised digital experience.    How does the solution help the customer?   If I am to explain CIAM’s landmark breakthrough it could be similar to walking through Amazon’s grocery stores, picking up groceries, and then walking out without waiting in line at a cashier. Here, a suite of technologies is utilised to identify which items you picked to calculate your bill and then deduct it from a billing method listed on the individual’s Amazon account. Amazon customers also have the convenience of using a single profile to purchase items from any one of their international digital storefronts. By implementing CIAM, businesses will be able to gather information about their customers’ purchasing habits and customise their digital experience such as the listing of products, locations, reminder emails for products still in their basket, back in stock, etc., and offer a truly connected buying experience.   How does Asgardeo combine convenience and security?   Previously, developers had to strike a balance between convenience and security. Recent events have also forced enterprises to accelerate digital initiatives – often by years – and delivering enhanced digital experiences has become key. Asgardeo offers all the key security features that are fundamental to any effective CIAM solution such as single sign-on (SSO), multi-factor authentication (MFA), and social logins, which are examples of CIAM that offer greater convenience. It also reduces the complexity of deployment even for developers who are unskilled in the areas of CIAM.   How has WSO’s background contributed to creating Asgardeo?   Since 2007, we have been in the IAM field with the launch of our open source product WSO2 Identity Server. Today, this solution caters to over 250 of the biggest global companies – industry leaders in telco, healthcare, and education, as well as some of the most digitally advanced government agencies. Based on our experience, we were able to design and build Asgardeo to empower developers at startups and small businesses with prebuilt toolkits for quick CIAM integration without the need for extensive technical expertise.  Asgardeo offers scalability, reliability, and agility for any developer and also provides a free tier for anyone looking to get started until further investment is justified or even possible. As a result, Asgardeo has made CIAM and IDaaS accessible to startups and SMEs.    How will the Asgardeo platform empower organisations?    With a holistic approach, the usability of Asgardeo with its predefined modules and low code implementation methods reduces the burden of deep technical expertise by removing the hassle of writing and debugging strenuous code required for a CIAM system and empowers organisations to focus on delivering value to their customers.  Organisations can instead deploy their resources towards more important areas of focusing on core product development, reducing costs, and speeding up time to market. Going forward, we are working to create a total identity platform through Asgardeo, providing organisations the flexibility of choosing between on-premises, cloud-based, or hybrid platforms for CIAM.  Our advice to organisations is to obtain expert opinions with regard to CIAM, avoiding the dilemma of build vs. buy.  CIAM is no longer a ‘nice-to-have’. Every entrepreneur and developer should start thinking about CIAM for the benefit of their business, particularly as more and more businesses go digital. Simple platforms like Asgardeo are a guaranteed method to future-proof digital solutions as, for example, social logins are used more commonly now, and Asgardeo can help businesses identify which social logins customers will use to create a more personalised experience.    What is Asgardeo’s future roadmap?   After nearly nine months in beta, these are exciting times. We are now at a stage where every few weeks new features are being added to continue to enhance its capabilities and the promise of delivering CIAM without compromise.
