Release hidden fertiliser stocks, Government to traders

02 Jun 2021

The Government yesterday (1) made a request for fertilizer traders to release their hidden fertilizer stocks to the market. The Department of Government Information said in a statement that after the government decided to stop the use and import of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, some fertiliser traders have taken steps to hide the stocks of imported chemical fertilisers. The announcement further states that the importation of chemical fertilisers will not be permitted by 2021 and that there will be no benefit in concealing the fertilisers. On 29 April, the President said that Sri Lanka would become the first country in the world to take up the challenge to eliminate the use of chemical fertiliser, adding that necessary steps would be taken to facilitate the production of organic fertiliser at district levels. The Cabinet of Ministers approved the proposal to ban all chemical fertilisers in Sri Lanka in the same week. The President’s Media Division (PMD) also noted that the Government incurs a huge healthcare expense in treating non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as kidney diseases which arose as a use of chemical fertiliser and that this cost is increasing each year.
