Remand prisoners : To be charged and released

22,000 prisoners in remand prisons 

By Skandha Gunasekara Remand prisoners are to be charged and released to decongest the 22,000 inmates who are housed in the remand prisons system, The Morning learnt. “The Attorney General has instructed that remand prisoners be charged and released so the congestion in prisons can be reduced,” Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya told The Morning. [caption id="attachment_93027" align="alignleft" width="300"] Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya[/caption] He added that the Colombo Remand Prison and the Kalutara, Negombo, and Galle Prisons were some of the most congested. He said that the process would be managed by the judiciary and the Police. “They will be released as soon as possible in accordance with the Attorney General’s instructions.” He added that the prison system was overly congested.  “Especially with the coronavirus, the decongestion of prisons is crucial.”
