Remanded MPs are permitted to attend Parliament: Speaker

24 Jan 2020

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya today said that remanded parliamentarians had permission to attend parliamentary sessions. Jayasuriya was responding to an MP's question as to why MP Ranjan Ramanayake had attended Parliament whilst in remand custody. The governing party MP said that no one in remand custody is allowed to be taken out of prison without a court order. However, Jayasuriya pointed out that MPs have special privilege to attend parliamentary sessions while in remand custody. Ramanayake has been attending parliamentary sessions this week and has been seen escorted by a prison bus. Ramanayake who was arrested over exerting undue influence on judges was remanded until 29 January by the Nugegoda Magistrate last wednesday(15).
