Renewed demand for Covid vaccines amidst rise in cases

  • Train passengers urged to follow Covid guidelines
BY Buddhika Samaraweera A higher than usual inflow of people were observed at several vaccination centres in the Western Province yesterday (28) following a rise in Covid-19 cases in Sri Lanka and subsequent warnings and requests issued by the health authorities. The Ministry of Health has pointed out that it is important that the public obtain the Covid-19 vaccines on time, wear facemasks, and follow other Covid-19 related health guidelines, with Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Asela Gunawardena having confirmed five deaths and 119 infections of Covid-19 on Monday (25).  According to the Department of Government Information, the victims reported on Monday included three men and two women above the age of 60. Speaking to the media on Tuesday (26), Health Ministry Epidemiology Unit Head Dr. Samitha Ginige said: “There has been a clear increase in the global Covid-19 situation in the last two months. A few new Covid-19 variants have also been reported in some countries and it is said that these variants can spread more quickly than the existing ones and cause serious complications.” The Ministry of Health on Tuesday (26) pointed out that it is very important that the public obtain the Covid-19 vaccines on time, wear facemasks and follow other Covid-related health guidelines, as the Covid-19 pandemic situation is again increasing globally, and in Sri Lanka.  According to the Epidemiology Unit, as of 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday (27), Sri Lanka has recorded 16,548 Covid-19 deaths, while the total number of infections stood at 665,248, of which a total of 647,632 patients have recovered. Meanwhile, given the rising number of Covid-19 infections in the country, the Sri Lanka Railway Station Masters’ Union (SLRSMU) has urged train passengers to follow the Covid-19 related health guidelines, with the Ragama Railway Station having suspended issuing train tickets due to two Station Masters testing positive for Covid-19. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (28), SLRSMU General Secretary Kasun Chamara said that two Station Masters attached to the Ragama Railway Station have tested positive for Covid-19. He said that another two Station Masters attached to the same Railway Station have been directed to self-quarantine as they have been identified as close associates of the infected.  “All four of them were engaged in duties related to the issuance of tickets. Therefore, the issuance of train tickets from the Ragama Railway Station has been suspended until further notice. However, this will not be an impediment for the operation of trains,” he said. Noting that station masters have not been recruited since 2015 despite a considerable number of vacancies, Chamara said that in the case of another Covid-19 wave among the Railways Department's employees, the operation of trains would inevitably be disrupted. He also urged the passengers to follow the Covid-19 health guidelines as much as possible, given the increase in Covid-19 cases at present. During the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic, many employees of the department were infected with Covid-19, and as a result, many trains had to be cancelled. At that time, a system had also been devised in which employees were called to work on a roster basis. In addition, the department had also taken steps to establish two quarantine centres at the Colombo Fort and Narahenpita Railway Stations for its employees to undergo quarantine.
