Reopening schools: No decision on WP schools

01 Jan 2021

The Ministry of Education is yet to release instructions on reopening schools in the Western Province, it is learnt.  Speaking to The Morning, Western Province Department of Education Provincial Director of Education P.S. Nonis said: “We had a meeting on 31 December 2020 with the Minister of Education and other officials regarding reopening schools. Given the current situation, we are awaiting clearance from the health services authorities and once the Ministry of Education issues us the directives, we will be able to make an announcement.”  Schools will reopen for this year on Monday, 11 January across the island except for the Western Province and schools that are in isolated zones, as the areas have been identified as high-risk zones for Covid-19.  The Ministry will meet with the Western Province Department of Education officials next week to review the possibilities of reopening schools for 2021 in the Western Province.  Meanwhile, many schools in the Western Province have already requested parents of the primary school students to pick up their textbooks for the next grade by visiting schools on the designated dates, with textbook distributions having commenced on 28 December 2020 in many of the schools located in the Greater Colombo area.
