Reopening universities: Circular out today

22 Apr 2020

By Agra Ranasinghe The circular to reopen universities for academic and non-academic staff in districts which have no risk of Covid-19 is to be issued today (22), The Morning learnt. University Grants Commission (UGC) Chairman Prof. Sampath Amaratunge told The Morning that a circular to reopen universities for academic and non-academic staff only for research purposes is to be issued today. Although there has been a decision to open universities on 11 May, the decision was reconsidered on account of the sudden rise of the number of Covid-19 patients found in Colombo. “According to the new circular released by the Government, we have decided that universities will be open only with 10% or maybe 20% of the academic and non-academic staff, in districts which have no risk of Covid-19 and only for research purposes. By tomorrow (22), we will be issuing the new circular which we will publish on our website,” the UGC Head said.
