Repatriation process is risking a second wave of Covid: GMOA

02 Jul 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday (1) warned that the repatriation process was risking a second outbreak of Covid-19 in the country. GMOA Deputy Secretary Dr. Naveen De Soyza told The Morning that the influx of expats could cause a second wave. “Those coming into the country, especially from the Middle East, can be positive. Upon landing, they come in contact with multiple individuals even before going to quarantine centres,” Dr. Soyza said. He pointed out that officials at airline, airport, quarantine centres, and even the driver transporting returnees run the risk of contracting the disease, exposing the community at large. Dr. Soyza also cautioned that the testing process itself wasn’t foolproof. “The PCR test is accurate only 75% of the time. That is why quarantine is essential for all returnees,” he said, urging authorities to take all possible measures to prevent another surge in Covid-19 cases.
