Report on SLBFE financial fraud probe: Loss of Rs. 138 m exposed

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa A report of the committee appointed to investigate financial frauds committed by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) during 2015-2019 has revealed that the Government has incurred a loss of Rs. 138 million due to various mismanagements identified by the committee. The report of the interim committee was handed over to State Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Market Diversification Piyankara Jayaratne at the Ministry on Wednesday (23). The State Minister said that there are eight points in that report which should be paid attention to, and that necessary steps will be taken with regard to the Ran Piyapath media programme, vehicles obtained outside the standard procedure, the purchase of a Jaguar car for the Chairman outside the tender procedure, action taken to involve officials in political activities, and the opening of a branch office in Galle by a monitoring Member of Parliament (MP). He said the report would be submitted to the Secretary and referred to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) to recover the lost money.
