  • Registrar General’s Dept. opens digital payments for certificates
  • Receive via post or collect from DS
BY Dinitha Rathnayake The Registrar General’s Department commenced the issuance of copies of birth, death, and marriage certificates online yesterday (2), which can be obtained by express mail or from the nearest Divisional Secretariat (DS), the Department announced. Speaking to The Morning, Registrar General W.M.M.B. Weerasekara said that this new system was initially launched in Weeraketiya. “The public can request certificates either using their phone or computer and by making an online payment where they can receive the certificates by express post or collect them from the relevant divisional secretariat. We would serve on a first come, first serve basis. We can provide 20,000 birth, death, or marriage certificates per day where people who were born after 1960 can apply easily. However, we are  in the process of updating our system where people born before 1960 would also be able to fulfil their requirements within a few days with the help of the local government system,” he explained. Weerasekara also added that the Department is planning to release deeds and copies of or extracts from any deed relating to any land in the near future. “Our next plan is to issue a national birth certificate for those who were born after 2015 as the initial stage. The specialty of this certificate is that it is issued under one specific number for each individual where the same number would apply for their marriage certificate.” He further noted that this system would automatically benefit the legal system of the country where this number would prevent women from falling prey to bigamists and incidents of making fake certificates.
