Restricted movement: Public transport for essential work

28 Apr 2020

The Ministry of Transport said that it will focus on deploying sufficient buses once the curfew is relaxed, following a systematic mechanism. In a statement, the Ministry said that the buses owned by the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) are deployed for the purpose of providing public transport for those working in essential services, such as health, security, and government sector employees, and private institutions that will commence work once the curfew is relaxed from 4 May onwards. Although the SLTB buses are deployed to cover the entire island, it is not sufficient for that purpose. In addition, the private sector does not want to operate their buses as their daily income would be reduced. As such, the public transport provided would facilitate travel for only those engaged in essential duties. This decision has been taken solely to implement the instructions given by the Government to safeguard people from being infected by Covid-19. The announcement further states that this decision will be made easier after the Government decides to allow controlled movement of citizens according to the final number in their National Identity Card (NIC). The SLTB, meanwhile, made arrangements to provide transport through a systematic mechanism for employees to report to and fulfil their government and private sector duties by the date the curfew in the Colombo District is lifted. The Colombo District is currently designated as a high-risk zone. Public and private sector institutions and companies that require public transport services to facilitate travel for their employees are requested to send an email to dgmoperation@sltb.lk. The email should mention the number of employees on each bus route and should also include the contact details of the co-ordinating officer from the institution or company. The SLTB requests that this information be shared via the above email address or through their fax number, 0112 505 408, by 28 April. Once the details are collected, the SLTB will make the necessary arrangements to deploy sufficient buses to transport persons reporting to work in the Colombo District. Persons can also contact 0771 056 032 should they need any clarification.
