The Trade Ministry, which recently entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Myanmar to import 100,000 metric tonnes (MT) of rice, is confident that the said consignment of rice will reach Sri Lanka within the course of this month, The Morning learnt.
When inquired about the timeframe for the relevant stock of rice to arrive in Sri Lanka, Trade Ministry Secretary Bhadranie Jayawardhana told The Morning yesterday (10) that the supplier and the buyer of the rice stocks are currently in discussions regarding the rest of the agreements to be signed for the said importation.
“The import being discussed is between the seller and the buyer of the rice consignment. As both parties have agreed to the terms of the MoU, the consignment will be delivered to Sri Lanka within this month,” she stated.
The Trade Ministry announced last Friday (7) that a MoU was signed between Sri Lanka and Myanmar to import 100,000 MT of rice. The virtual agreement was signed by Trade Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardana on behalf of the Government of Sri Lanka and Myanmar’s Commercial Affairs Minister U. Win Myint on behalf of the Government of Myanmar. “The two countries signed the MoU to import 100,000 MT of rice from Myanmar to supply rice to the people at lower prices. This stock of rice is expected to be maintained as a security stock,” the Trade Ministry stated last week.
