Rishad Bathiudeen's wife claims his arrest is arbitrary

03 May 2021

Wife of Rishad Bathiudeen, Ayesha Rishad, today wrote to the President Gotabaya Rajapaksa claiming that her husband's arrest was arbitrary. She brought to his attention that the CID had descended on their house in the month of Ramadan and that Rishad had no information on the grounds on which he was arrested. She also stated that no matters regarding the Colossus company and exports had been discussed among Rishad Bathiudeen and Balasubramaniyam during the phone calls on 27th and 28th March 2019. "Since the Easter Attacks, my husband had vehemently condemned the terrorists and the bombings. However, when fingers were pointed at him, he resigned with dignity and fully cooperated in the investigations," she stated. She also pointed out that while several warnings were issued by the terrorist group of the Easter Attacks, the government at the time did not respond to it. She alleged that her husband had no part in it and strongly condemned all the reasons stated by Zaharan Hashim as to why the attack had taken place. She finally urged the President to consider the facts with the Attorney General and order the release of Rishad Bathiudeen and his brother, following any necessary investigations.
