Rishad’s family caught in ‘contradictions’

23 Aug 2021

  • Conflicting statements by family members on death
  • Bathiudeen named fifth defendant
BY Pamodi Waravita It is learnt that the family members of All Ceylon Makkal Congress Leader and Samagi Jana Balawegaya Opposition Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen had provided contradictory statements about the death of their 16-year-old housemaid. This was revealed yesterday (23) at the Colombo Magistrate’s Court when the inquest proceedings into the girl’s death commenced where MP Bathiudeen was named the fifth defendant in the case.  It was revealed that the family members, who have now been implicated in the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death, had informed the 1990 ambulance service that arrived to take the girl to hospital that she had suffered a gas burn. However, other statements made by them regarding the same had contradicted the said version of events by claiming that the girl had attempted to commit suicide by setting herself on fire using a lighter. Furthermore, it was revealed in Court yesterday that although the second post-mortem report on the girl’s body had been unable to comment on the time period during which she had been subjected to acts of sexual intercourse, it had confirmed that she had experienced several instances of sexual intercourse. The second autopsy was conducted to ascertain the veracity of the first post-mortem examination’s findings of the girl having experienced sexual intercourse since the age of 12 years and that the girl had experienced sexual intercourse on several occasions.  Bathiudeen has been named as the fifth defendant in the case, while the four other suspects - Bathiudeen’s wife, Bathiudeen’s father-in-law, Bathiudeen’s brother-in-law, and the broker who had brought the child to the residence - had been denied bail and been further remanded until 6 September.  In July, the Police stated that investigations had revealed that a girl was brought to the house of Bathiudeen in October 2020 as a domestic worker, when she was 15 years and 11 months old. The girl, who had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL) on 3 July with burn injuries, had died on 15 July while receiving treatment, the Borella Police said.  Bathiudeen, who was previously briefly hospitalised at the Colombo National Hospital whilst incarcerated, is in the custody of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) after being arrested on 24 April 2021 and detained by the CID under the Prevention of Terrorism (Temporary Provisions) Act, No. 48 of 1979 as amended, in connection with his alleged involvement in the Easter Sunday terror attacks. Last week, he was ordered to be remanded till 1 September by the Colombo Fort Magistrate.  When the Police had questioned 11 other women who had been employed as domestic workers at Bathiudeen’s residence, one of them had alleged that Bathiudeen’s brother-in-law, Mohamed Shiabdeen Ismat, had sexually abused her. Two separate cases were filed against him for the sexual abuse of domestic workers who had been previously employed at the residence.
