Road accidents cause 11 deaths yesterday; Police to launch special traffic operation tomorrow

Eleven people including a police constable attached to the Hanwella Police were killed from fatal road accidents yesterday, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said. He said the police constable’s vehicle had collided with another vehicle at Meegahawatta. The DIG said there was an increase in fatal road accidents after quarantine curfew and restrictions have been lifted. “Before COVID-19, about 8 - 10 fatal accidents were reported daily. During the pandemic, there were no accidents and the numbers are gradually increasing again,” he said. The DIG said a special traffic operation would be launched from tomorrow specially aiming the weekend to nab errant drivers including those who driver under influence.
