Rough seas and rainfall above 100 mm

23 Apr 2020

The Department of Meteorology forecasts showers and thundershowers in a few places in the sea area extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota, with showers and thundershowers expected in the sea area extending from Mannar to Matara via Puttalam, Colombo, and Galle in the evening or night. Winds will be southerly to south-westerly in the sea areas around the island. Wind speed will be 20-30 kmph. The sea areas extending from Mannar to Colombo via Puttalam may be moderately rough at times as wind speed can increase up to 40 kmph. The sea area around the island can be slightly to moderately rough. Temporarily strong gusty winds, up to 70-80 kmph, and rough seas can be expected during thundershowers. Meanwhile over the land area, showers are expected to enhance in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces during the next few days. Showers or thundershowers will occur from time to time in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Southern provinces. Showers or thundershowers will occur at several places elsewhere after 2 p.m. Heavy rainfalls above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Central, Southern, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces. The general public is requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by lightning activity and localised strong winds during thundershowers. Misty conditions can be expected at some places in the Sabaragamuwa and Central provinces during the morning. By Sarah Hannan
